Normally the greatest barrier to starting a new hobby, in particular martial arts, is the fear of the unknown and uncertainty of something new! In our classes we refer to it as 'Fright Night SYNDROME' where possible new members are anxious about starting due to the perception of their first session being singled out, not made welcome and, in alot of martial arts, like being placed in an army boot camp! Our classes are quite the opposite in that we deliver them in view of ensuring all members, families and friends feel welcome and their needs/goals are met, in what really does become a most satisfying pass-time. As you will instantly become aware, our instructors are very friendly and keen to help you achieve and get the most out of what you do. Everyone has to start somewhere and to coin the old chinese proverb - 'every great journey starts with a small step', - even chief instructor Mr John Swift tied a white belt around his waist once!
What is Taekwondo? Taekwondo literally mean 'foot' 'hand' 'way or art' and was orginally deigned for the Korean armed forces. It has evolved into a well-rounded martial art offering something for almost everyone - realistic self-defence, fitness, stress relief, building of self confidence, social elements and much more! What do you do in class? Our Taekwondo classes offer a wide variety of aspects and our sessions offer a different workout week to week. Generally they include all the traditional aspects of I.T.F. Taekwondo - self-defence, patterns, semi-contact sparring, aswell as the modern day C.V. and fitness work of pad and bag training. Do I need to be fit to do Taekwondo? Not necessarily, in fact alot of people actually join Taekwondo to get fit! In parts, fitness does help but the instructors know that everyone is different and always try to ensure students push themselves where they can in attempt to attain higher and better personal levels and goals. Are there people my age doing Taekwondo? Probably, we have students as young as 4 1/2 up to 65 years training with us! Do I have to wear those scarey white pyjamas? The uniform we wear is called a dobok and it is part of the tradition and etiquette of our martial art. It also ensures all those who start are equal and eliminates any initial preceived image of elitism. How long will it take me to get to black belt? It takes a minimum of 3 1/2 years to get to black belt with us but it is dependent on your training, progess and development. There are plenty of other optional shorter term targets along the journey such as competitions, seminars, training courses - first aid and instructors to name a few, and also other coloured belts! How do I start? Phone one of the numbers below to book your place or join us on a training night and the instructors will welcome you in for you FREE introduction class! Alternatively, feel free to email us via the highlighted link at the top of the page!
We look forward to seeing you in class!
