Well done to all those who took part and supported the 2009 V.M.A. Summer Slam Championships in Hagley during August - it was a brilliant day! The usual introductions and fun opened the event but this time it was done with a kick shield jump kick competition. With the kick shields stacked up, competitors had to jump over and strike a focus paddle positioned on the other side, Thomas Badham, Jack Morton, Joseph Andrews, Scott Robb and Matt Cartwright battled it out. The eventual winner was Matt Cartwright who cleared a height of 10 kick shields (144cm!!!) - and there was no Wonderwoman costume in sight ... well ... not until later when he sneaked into the ladies tag team category as Matilda Cartwright with Andrea McLead as Big Guns!!! An exceptional bo staff demonstration followed the jump kicking with The Toon family consisting of father Richard and two sons Callum and Lukas displaying a syncronised creative form. Making the demonstration even more amazing was the fact that their first experience with a bo staff was in Mr Swifts weapons class 3 weeks previous to the summer slam! Well done the Toon family! The competition element of the event then started and saw some new categories including syncronised patterns as well as the new format tag-team sparring - both were awesome. The syncro. patterns highlight was possibly Mrs Swift and Mr Evans winning the black belt category and tag-teams being Jasmine Beardsmore and Alice Adams clean sweeping the junior girls black belts!!! As well as the competitive categories there were charity fund raising projects going on, a big thank you must go to Mrs Bestwick who spent the day doing face painted as well as Courtney Turrall and Alice Adams who baked cakes, bisuits and goodies for a stall with all proceeds going to the local county air ambulance services. In addition, everyone received a certificate just for taking part, again a very well done to all those involved. The results were as follows -

COMPETITION - I.T.S. British Championships 2008
Mr Swift opened the event and then in true 'ring-announcer' style introduced a demo tag-team match up between Superman (Lee Grazier) and Spiderman (Jack Morton) - guess appearances were made by Banana man (Richard Leech) and Wonder Woman (Matt Cartwright)! Not sure who enjoyed the match up more - the kids or the adults! Superman and Wonder women were victorious on this occasion, talks of a re-match have already begun - so watch this space! The junior categories started the day and were as keenly competitive as always. Firstly, the patterns divisions highlighted the technical precision and prowess that Taekwondo has become famous for and such was the standard that many of the 1st and 2nd places were only decided after repeat patterns were asked to be performed. The junior sparring had a new air of anticipation this year with the invitation of Jason Charlesworth and his CMA team who are recently back from the Czech Republic and the I.S.K.A. World championships. One of the tightest junior categories saw the under 160cm black belts Reuben Charlesworth (CMA) take on Joseph Andrews (VERVE TKD) in the final. The skill and versatility of both fighters was excellent to watch but Reuben took the spoils winning by a couple of points. The senior categories were equally as competitive and too many fine performances to mention but one was the travelling I.T.S. FIFE instructor Mr Ross Fisher who won the black belt category with an exceptional Gae Baek. In the way of adult sparring, possibly the most noticeable performances were the junior grade men's categories where Dean Russell and Nathan Wilding (VERVE KB) really emphasize the potential strength for next years senior grade categories! In the senior grade ladies categories, a healthy open weight division saw last years champion Manjit Kalcutt (WMST) fight through in fantastic style and regain her title in a category that boasted a 2 x ISKA world Champion in Denise Bryant and a number of other top level open circuit competitors - well done! Separating the junior and senior categories was the now familiar Jump Kick category where competitors simply had to kick a target which was positioned as high as possible - Ross Derrick from Scotland won with a height of 9 1/4 ft! Again, many thanks for those who supported the event, the event results were as follows -
